COLLEGE
PROGRAMS FOR COLLEGES
Aaheli Foundation offers a wide range of sessions and programs for graduate and postgraduate students across different disciplines, as well as programs for teachers.
Comprehensive sexuality education and personal safety education are not yet included in the central or state board curricula for school students, their teachers, school management, or in graduate and postgraduate curricula of disciplines such as social work, counseling, teaching, special education, nursing, medical education, public health, law, or police training. This directly impacts the laws enacted and services provided to children and adolescents, especially in contexts of gender-based violence, sexual expression, and sexual violence. Aaheli Foundation’s recent policy brief also highlights the necessity of comprehensive sexuality education and how its absence influences perceptions and criminalization of adolescent sexuality. Despite research proving otherwise, the misconception that comprehensive sexuality education leads to early sexual activity among adolescents persists.
In this context, it is crucial to advocate for the inclusion of age-appropriate, culturally sensitive, values- and rights-based education on gender equity, sexuality, and personal safety, including information on relevant laws, in the curricula of central and state education boards. Aaheli Foundation, supported by UNICEF, successfully advocated for this with SCERT Telangana in 2016. From 2020 to 2023, Aaheli Foundation developed a formal curriculum and resource materials, training 42 teachers from graduate and postgraduate courses across six streams (B Ed, Special Education, Psychology, Social Work, Nursing, and Public Health) from seven universities and institutions to conduct sessions on Gender Equity, Sexuality, and Personal Safety Education for over 300 students. Aaheli Foundation aims to promote the inclusion of gender equity, sexuality, and personal safety content in higher education curricula, including professional courses in four states where it has in-house language expertise. Additionally, collaborations are sought with the Federation of Obstetric and Gynecological Societies of India (FOGSI) and the Indian Academy of Pediatrics (IAP) to advance these efforts.

For students of graduate and post-graduate courses
To build capacity in the area of gender equity, sexuality and personal safety education, and restorative practices, we offer a variety of programs for students, ranging from short awareness sessions to training sessions over a few days to certificate courses and year-long post graduate diploma courses
Peer education program
Aaheli Foundation initiated and institutionalized a Peer Education program at Christ University in 2010, training 48 Peer educators to facilitate discussions on gender equity, relationships, sexuality, and personal safety. This system facilitates greater acceptance of desired changes in attitudes and behaviors regarding sexual rights and responsibilities.
The Peer Educators at Aaheli Foundation initiate, design, and implement group learning processes after receiving thorough training. They act as catalysts for change within their peer groups, leading semi-formal discussions on the mentioned topics. These sessions encourage dialogue on effective strategies, identify problematic behaviors in relationships, and provide informed, scientific insights and personal anecdotes to promote shifts in attitudes and behaviors among group members.
For teachers of graduate and post graduate courses and counsellors
We provide training for teachers in five disciplines—B Ed, Nursing, Social Work, Psychology, and Special Education—on facilitating Sexuality, Gender, and Personal Safety Education. Our goal is to empower them to lead sessions on these crucial topics for their students. Through this training, we aim to collaborate with teachers to equip their students with the skills needed to deliver life skills-based education on gender equity, comprehensive sexuality, and personal safety. These skills are essential for their interactions with children and community members both during their studies and throughout their professional and personal lives.
